App Store Catalogs category

Apple has added a new 'Catalogs' category to its App Store ahead of its iPad 3/iPad HD unveiling later on today. A number of iOS applications have already been listed under the new section, but it seems it is not yet ready for public use.

You won't find the Catalogs category in the App Store just yet, but visiting it directly in your web browser presents a huge list of apps that have already been listed under the new section. All of them have been in the App Store a while and were previously listed under the Lifestyle and Utilities categories, according to MacRumors.

Joaquin Ruiz, CEO of Catalog Spree, one of the apps listed under the new Catalogs category, believes the new addition could have something to do with Apple's upcoming iPad:

Ruiz said in an email, "Adding an app category is not something that Apple does lightly and we believe Apple's decision reflects the importance of this usecase in the Apple App Store ecosystem."

Could the Cupertino company be preparing to revolutionize catalogues in the same way it has revolutionized the textbook? It certainly makes sense to me. Imagine browsing the catalogue of your favorite store and having the ability to watch videos of its products in action, or interacting with 3D models that allow you to view them from all angles.

Of course, it could simply be a coincidence that the new category pops up just hours before Apple's media event. All will be revealed in just a few hours.
