Amazon has struck yet another blow in the streaming media content wars and has snagged the Epix catalog.
Epix has been offering its own streaming content for some time now, and then signed an exclusive deal with Netflix that bolstered that company's more recent video offerings. That exclusivity window has now expired and Amazon has lept at the chance to bring the channel into the fold.
This new deal will see the addition of many more big budget hits to Amazon Prime Instant Video such as Iron Man 2, The Avengers, The Hunger Games, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and more. This positions Amazon in even more of a sweet spot with its Amazon Prime service becoming more and more attractive to consumers who plop down $79 a year for unlimited 2 day shipping and receive the video content as a bonus.
As the press release states below, Amazon has more than doubled its Prime Instant Video content since this time last year when it introduced the Kindle Fire. With the Kindle Fire 2 looking to be announced this week, the timing of this deal couldn't be better.
Meanwhile, this latest salvo in the streaming wars has hit Netflix where it hurts the most: In the valuation of its stock. Shares of Netflix are down around 10 percent in morning trading on the back of this news.
