Amazon Has gotten very serious about creating original video content, and to that end, it has announced its first four original series contenders.

Last month Amazon Studios, the development arm of the popular Internet shopping portal, announced that it was accepting submissions for original comedies and children's programming. While you would normally expect such a process to take some time, the company has already announced its first four selections.

  • The 100 Deaths of Mort Grimley – Where a man kills himself, then is forced to become an avatar of Hell, with the duty to get a special list of 100 people to commit suicide in his stead, or else be damned to spend all of eternity next to his cruel, smothering mother.
  • Buck Plaidsheep – A courageous critter from Fleecy farm, who'll face any danger and solve any problem. Armed with a variety of vehicles, Whether it be a jet pack, rowboat, hang glider or even a jeep, He always has the best vehicle to get the job done.
  • Doomsday – A mockumentary about the supposed end of the world.
  • Magic Monkey Billionaire – When their magician owner dies after winning the lottery, Rabbit and Monkey are shocked to learn that he left his money to happy moron Monkey and donated evil genius Rabbit to a 2nd grade class. In each episode, Rabbit hatches a plan to steal Monkey's billions.

You can currently read the pilot script for each series at the linked sites along with the accompanying series bibles – the documents produced at the beginning of any show to help all oncoming staff with the overall vision of the series and character descriptions.

The next step for these four shows will include working with more writers and producers to flesh the ideas out, and if they get past that stage they will move on to shooting pilots.  There is still a long road ahead of these projects, but it's intriguing to see Amazon moving into this realm.

If I was to guess, I'd say Magic Monkey Billionaire has one of the best shots as it's animated.  In the original proposals for submissions, Amazon included information on potential licensing and product deals, and looking at the first character sketches from the series (see below), it screams out for some products.
