Mark your calendars for April 29 for a historical debut as two canceled –All My Children
andOne Life to Live
– make their debuts online.
While we fully realize soap operas aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, there is something to be said for the precedent that is being set with the returns of All My Children and One Life to Live. Even a few years ago everyone would have scoffed at the idea of canceled shows being resurrected online, but as these two shows, as well as the return of Arrested Development on Netflix, show, there is a very definite possibility now.
As none of these shows have aired yet we have no clue how they will succeed, but what keeps all of us here at TechnoBuffalo intrigued as what this could mean down the road should they be successful. If these soaps, which ABC considered dead, are successful in this format, could we see not only other canceled series return, or the Internet be considered as a serious alternative medium in the days to come?
Soap operas have a history of being bold in changing mediums and technologies – radio to TV, black & white to color and so on – so it seems only fitting that it may be the genre that leads us into a new age of Internet programming.
All My Children and One Life to Live will debut on Hulu and iTunes on April 29.
