SEGA and The Creative Assembly have revealed the release date for Alien: Isolation, and you can expect to find the game on shelves on Oct. 7.
The latest game in the Aliens franchise claims to be taking the series back to its horror roots, much like the original 1979 Ridley Scott film. The game puts players in the eyes of Amanda Ripley, daughter of the film series’ protagonist Ellen Ripley, as she tries to outwit a single Alien that’s attempting to capture her on an abandoned space station.
Many are watching Alien: Isolation with mixed feelings of excitement and skepticism. The Creative Assembly is a talented studio when it comes to strategy games like Total War: Rome, but this is its first time with the survival horror genre.
What’s more striking though is the way that the team members are describing the game doesn’t sound too far off from the last Aliens game SEGA tried to make, Aliens: Colonial Marines. This game’s titular monster has an AI which is totally unscripted meaning no two encounters are the same, and the beast will be chasing you through the base’s complex air duct system. Gearbox went about hyping its Aliens game with the same enthusiasm, and none of it proved to be true.
So far, previews for Alien: Isolation have been very positive, and if nothing else, the game is shaping up to be at least different from the mold of what we called “survival-horror” these days; that is, scary action games like Dead Space. The Creative Assembly has been channeling minor hits like Amnesia: The Dark Descent, hopefully giving it a unique edge that other big console releases this coming holiday season might lack.
Alien: Isolation will be released on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC this Oct. 7.
