During the 2019 Grammys ceremony, the second trailer for Aladdin was released giving us an extended look at the live action remake of the 1992 animated classic. We got a teaser trailer months ago but that only showed off Aladdin, not Jasmine or Will Smith's Genie. Now that we have seen them, most people are wishing they hadn't.
The main source of contention seems to be Will Smith as Genie. Look, there's no way around it, he looks pretty awful. We'll take it easy on the insults because it may just be pre-production CGI work that still needs to be smoothed out before its release in three months, but it did not inspire confidence.
It almost just looks like Will Smith was just turned blue and slightly enlarged, but that's about it. Yet it's not in a good way; his face looks quite unnatural, almost as if superimposed on a bigger body. We're crossing our fingers Disney fixes these issues before the movie is released. For the time being, fans are not happy given the dislike ratio for the trailer on YouTube. As of the writing of this post, dislikes outnumber likes 28K to 25K.
It also doesn't help that he is portraying a character that was made iconic by Robin Williams' voice action in the original. Anything less than perfect and people were going to find some fault with it.
Besides the questionable CGI work, Jafar (played by Marwan Kenzari) and Jasmine (played by Naomi Scott) look great. We can't wait to see what the rest of the movie looks like.
Aladdin flies into theaters May 24.
