Out of the blue, Apple officially introduced new and improved AirPods 2, which feature Hey Siri support and improved battery life. If you're thinking of picking up Apple's wireless headphones, you can order them right now.
How are AirPods 2 better than AirPods?
Although the AirPods 2 look exactly like Apple's first-generation AirPods, the wireless headphones feature some under-the-hood upgrades.
The first thing you need to know is that AirPods 2 support "Hey Siri" functionality. So, when you want to invoke Siri while wearing AirPods 2, you can simply say, "Hey Siri," similar to what you can do on iPhone.
AirPods 2 also comes equipped with an H1 chip, compared to the W1 chip found in the original AirPods. According to Apple, the H1 chip features "custom audio architecture to create a revolutionary audio experience and improved synchronization."
The H1 chip also promises up to 50 percent more talk time compared to the first generation AirPods, according to Apple. That's a major win for folks who use the AirPods to take conference calls.
How to order AirPods 2 in the US
Available from Apple and elsewhere
The best way to get your hands on the AirPods 2 is directly from Apple. You have three options: go to an Apple Store, visit Apple's website, or download the Apple Store app.
The good news is Apple is offering free shipping for the new AirPods. If you don't want to wait for shipping, you can always choose in-store pickup, although the option won't be available until next week.
As of right now, it looks like the AirPods are also available from B&H Photo. Once the wireless headphones become available more widely, we'll be sure to update this post.
