Our readers are constantly asking us what we shoot our video and photos with. We’ve put together the gallery below of our photo/filming equipment. Lucky for Ralph, he gets to lug that equipment around whenever we have an event, including through just about every moment of CES.
Canon 5D Mark III DSLR Camera
The crown jewel of the TB filming equipment is the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, we specifically chose this camera for it’s full frame capability, it features amazing low-light performance. It’s convenient for us to have the film-capable DSLR that can shoot high quality photos as well as shoot with a high FPS for video. We previously had the EOS 5D Mark II, but upgraded to this body. We’ve loved the quality of this camera and have been extremely happy with it.
The camera is only as good as the lens and we mainly use 3:
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens
The 16-35mm is great for really wide shots, large objects, a large group of people or a crowd. We also use this guy mainly for any teleprompter reads, mostly because it fits inside the teleprompter hood.
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Standard Zoom Lens
The 24-70mm is the workhorse for TechnoBuffalo videos and photos. We shoot nearly everything with this lens: most of the videos you see on the site as well as the galleries of product shots. We typically don’t need much zoom beyond 70mm, so this functions quite well for us.
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens
The 24-105mm is used for those situations when we do need the little extra zoom, we’ll take this guy with us to events if we’re not seated at the front of a event.
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens
The 50mm gives a great effect that blurs pretty much anything that is out of focus. It’s a great lens for any portrait shots.
Canon BG-E11 Battery Grip
The Canon battery grip is great for added capacity and gives us the flexibility without having to stop and switch out batteries when we’re on the go. The additional buttons are great for added comfort and control when shooting photos in portrait.
GoPro HD HERO2
The GoPro Hero 2s are primarily used when we are shooting our footage in vehicles for our TechnoBuffalo’s Driven YouTube show.
Incase DSLR Pro Pack
The Incase DSLR Pro Pack is a phenomenal DSLR bag, because it carries every single item in our set up. It has compartments for ever single device we carry. We had Ralph carry everything around on his poor back with this backpack and it served us quite well.
The 2nd generation iPad Serves as teleprompter (through the use of an iOS app, iCue, available on iTunes) and feeds Jon his lines when he’s got lots of specs to remember. iCue has a secondary app that allows you to use an iOS device as a remote control. The iPad reflects off the teleprompter mirror and camera hood to deliver a seamless experience.
Zoom H1 Audio Recorder
We use the Zoom H1 for audio recording when filming in the TechnoBuffalo Studio and it gives great clarity to the audio in our videos. We use a mic stand to keep it placed above the camera so it sounds natural on your end.
Shure/Sennheiser Handheld Microphone
We us a Shure SM58 wireless microphone along with a Sennheiser receiver that feeds back audio to the camera. This is great when conducting interviews and not having to mic up the interviewee. Look at Jon Q as he runs through CES with one of these in tow, mad skills. Of course the microphone kit is not complete without a TechnoBuffalo branded mic flag.
Rode VideoMic Pro Microphone
We also use a mounted Rode Video Microphone Pro that attaches to the camera and is a really great directional microphone that picks up the sound we want but does a fantastic job keeping out all the unnecessary background noise.
Lighting is important, and with the high-definition of the video quality, we need to make sure it looks right. We purchased a video lighting kit with green screen and they get the job done for all our needs.
Manfrotto 190XV Tripod
We use a 190XV Manfrotto tripod with a 701HDV Manfrotto tripod head.
