We were afforded the opportunity to spend a few days at Disney’s D23 Expo, a fan event for all things Disney. D23 Expo is filled all the magic and fantasy that is Disney but it also has a slew of new technology from home entertainment, gaming, theme park animatronics and beyond. The event is 3 days fIlled with panels of Disney legends, Imagineers and actors, exhibitions of Disney memorabilia, historical artifacts dug up from the Disney Archives, yes it is a real thing.
Think ComicCon, but just all things that fall under the Disney empire. Complete with animation, princesses, villains, Pixar, Marvel and now Star Wars. Yes, fans dress up!
Conventions in themselves are an event, but I don’t know what exactly it is that especially draws me into the spectacle that is the D23 Expo. The fantasy, magic, cosplay? All of the above?
People like to dress up to their favorite charters. Here we have Rufio and Peter Pan. “Rufio! Rufio! Ru-Fi OOOO!”
The Hatbox Ghost from Haunted Mansion was originally removed just days after the attraction opened over four decades ago. He may be making a return.
America’s 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. Well just his animatronic head. Honestly, though the technology crammed into this form factor is amazing.
What is this pumpkin guy? Characters from Enchanted on the right.
In addition to panels, presentations, previews, signings, there is of course the all important shopping. The guy in the black shirt looks like he stole something. GET HIM!
Even Star Tours StarSpeeders need to shop. Honestly one of the coolest costumes I saw all day.
Gary selling some stuff at his booth. He was very nice and he has some cool stuff.
Gary had a fine collection of Orange Bird merchandise. You are not a true Disney fan unless you know Orange Bird.
If plates, pins and artwork aren’t enough you could bid for a part of the Matterhorn Bobsleds. Slightly used.
You never know who you will run in to while shopping. Case in point, Mama Odie from Princess and the Frog
Or Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid here begging for a bag, with who else on it but Ariel.
No really, look there are lines at to go shopping, it isn’t for a ride. To buy stuff!
Maybe you’d like to recreate your own version of “it’s a small world” in your living room?
Hey Look! I found Walt Disney! Maybe?
There was even a costume contest. These are the winners. Complete with Mini-Rocketeer.
Here’s Walt Disney again looking over his adoring fans. “Mr. Disney Look out… URSULA!”
Phew, she’s just there to pose for pictures. Not to steal your soul. I hope.
Phone lockers to juice up your portable electronic devices.
So you can head off to the next scheduled event.
