So, you just went out and grabbed the latest computer from Dell/HP/Toshiba/Acer/Gateway/Lenovo/etc.? When you booted it up I bet you were so excited. You started to use it, and then had to check and see if you mistakenly bought a computer from 2004. This situation happens a lot as many users are unimpressed with the performance of there new mainstream PC. Believe it or not there are ways to from fix these issues and we are here to give secrets right the labs of skilled technicians to make your new PC run like … a new PC.
1.Run your Software Updates
Most computers have been sitting on the shelf long enough that they are behind in their Windows Software Updates. Not only do these updates give you crucial security fixes, but also often times help speed up your computer with patches to Windows and Hardware Drivers. Run software update until it tells you there are not any left. Also make sure you turn on Automatic Update.
In order to drive the price of computers down, PC manufacturers often get money from software companies to preload trials of their usually inferior software onto the computer. This software is slow, clunky and usually launches at startup, significantly reducing your speed. This software is most often referred to as “Bloatware”. To battle the bloat, go to the Control Panel and scour through for programs you don’t want. Common offenders are programs like “Cyberlink”, “PC-cillin”, Microsoft Office Trials, WildTangent Games, Google Desktop, AOL, Earthlink, and many other manufacturer specific programs like “HP blah blah blah Center/Console/Assistant”. Programs like “PC Decrapifier” attempt to automate the removal of bloat, but results can be hit or miss.
3.Ditch the Pre-Installed AntiVirus
Very Similar to the Bloatware, AntiVirus protection that is installed on your new PC is probably a trial. That means it will nag, bark and complain until you buy the inferior protection. My suggestion is to uninstall Norton/Trend-Micro/McAfee and others, and install one of the free programs out there. In my experience AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials are the best, but remember not to install more then one of them at a time. Also, forget about the Spyware/Malware software unless you are really going to visit shady sites. Most Anti-Virus programs offer sufficient protection against all the BadWare out there.
4. Change Your Web Browser
No matter how much Microsoft tries to convince me otherwise, Internet Explorer is slow, prone to attack and just doesn’t work well. My suggestion is go out and download Chrome or Firefox to optimize your browsing experience.
5. Check Your RAM
Sean Aune wrote a terrific article about RAM, and, believe it or not, often times PC’s come with a minimal amount of this important piece of hardware. Despite being cheap, it is not sufficient in many computers. Also, usually the cheapest time to purchase RAM is in the first 3-6 months of owning your PC. This is because of the fact RAM manufacturers are making more of the newer RAM as it is what is in demand. In the case of Windows 7, 2GB is a bare minimum for good performance, but 4GB is comfortable. Check out Sean’s article for more details.
Hopefully, following these five simple tips will make you enjoy your new PC more. After all, New PC’s should run faster then the computer they are replacing, right?
