Before we hop into the land of getting excited, please understand that by no means is this list meant to be definitive. These are five big games that I'm looking forward to in 2012. If I missed your most-hyped title, drop it in the comment box below.
Mass Effect 3 – PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC
The conclusion to this epic trilogy is bound to blow the collective mind of the gaming world when it drops in March of next year. BioWare, you can be sure, has been hard at work crafting a storyline that will hopefully live up to the ambitions they've created with the first two entries in this stellar series.
Commander Shepard will likely be taken to some very dark places throughout the happenings of this chapter in his story, and I'm very excited to see them all pan out.
Halo 4 – Xbox 360
What's interesting about Halo 4 for me is not the fact that it's the next game in Microsoft's mega franchise. Instead, what I'm looking forward to from this game is where the series is heading. Bungie is done with Halo. They stopped with Halo: Reach. Halo 4 is being created by 343 Industries.
It'll be interesting to see Master Chief and his universe in the first person perspective in someone else's hands.
The Last Guardian – PlayStation 3
I suppose the major caveat here is that The Last Guardian has been met with a minor wealth of delays over the course of its development cycle. Fumito Ueda, the game's creator, has made it official that he's leaving Sony. He will be completing the game on a contract, freelance basis.
If it does see retail in 2012, it's definitely worth getting excited for. Team Ico created both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. If The Last Guardian exists on the same plane of quality as those stellar games, it will be phenomenal.
Darksiders II – PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC
The original Darksiders took the gaming world by complete surprise. Players filled the shoes of War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as he accidentally wrought the Armageddon on Earth.
In Darksiders II, players will command War's brother Death as he seeks to right the wrongs set upon his brother. The game will feature a larger world and even more RPG elements throuhgout. Vigil, the developers behind both this and the original, are set to make an even better sequel.
BioShock Infinite – PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC
For me, this is the game I'm looking forward to most throughout all of 2012. BioShock blew me away when I played through it. The tension, the gameplay and the presence of the city of Rapture in the original game were standouts for the medium.
The concept of experiencing that again from the same creators but in a new locale with a new host of characters is exciting. The trailers and the gameplay I've personally seen and had demonstrated have been exceptional. This game better be good…or else I'll cry for days and days.
