Google Pixel adds Childish Gambino Playmoji to Playground

Google Pixel owners are being treated to a nice little exclusive: A new Playmoji inspired by Grammy award-winning artist Childish Gambino (a.k.a. Donald Glover).

The new interactive feature allows Pixel owners to add an animated version of the artist to photos and video. Google is challenging Pixel owners to share their dance off with Childish Gambino by using the hashtag “pixeldanceoff.”

According to Google, the search giant worked closely with Childish Gambino and his music video choreographer, Sherrie Silver, when creating the Playmoji. You can see what the experience looks like in the video above, in which the real Childish Gambino has a dance off with his animated counterpart.

“By using ARCore’s motion tracking, light estimation, and ability to understand the real world, his Playmoji looks and feels lifelike, whether he’s in front of you or in a selfie next to you,” said Elizabeth Morant, Product Manager for Google Playground. “He even reacts to your facial expressions in real time thanks to machine learning—try smiling or frowning in selfie mode and see how he responds.”

The Childish Gambino Playmoji will groove to three different songs sung by the artist: “Redbone,” “Summertime Magic,” and “This is America.” The new Playmoji pack is supported by the original Pixel up to the Pixel 3 XL.
