The next frontier for streaming content is going to be gaming. Amazon is reportedly working on a video game streaming service that is slated to launch in 2020.

First reported by The Information, sources close to the situation reveal that the service will follow the lead set by similar services with Microsoft’s Project xCloud and Google’s Project Stream. Like those platforms, Amazon’s streaming service aims to eliminate the need for expensive hardware and instead utilize data centers to deliver a high end gaming experience.

Amazon has already held discussions with game publishers to work out how games will be distributed. With the new service, users could play intensive games on smartphones, tablets, set top boxes and TVs. It could usher in a major innovation in the same way Netflix changed how we consume entertainment.

Few details are known about Amazon’s video game streaming platform, though reports claim it’s slated to launch some time in 2020.
