Amazon Has Sold Over 100 Million Alexa Devices

Amazon has now sold over 100 million Alexa devices after a very successful holiday season in 2018. Amazon SVP of devices Dave Limp revealed the milestone in an interview with The Verge, firmly establishing Amazon as the leader is smart home sales.

Among the Alexa devices sold include Amazon’s first-party Echo speakers along with third-party devices that use the smart assistant. According to Limp, the holiday season created such an interest in the Echo Dot, it couldn’t keep up with demand as it was “pushing pallets of Echo Dots onto 747s and getting them from Hong Kong to here as quickly as possible.”

The Echo Dot is now sold out on Amazon through January.

This means one thing for Amazon: It is a leader in smart speakers. Its 100 million figure likely dwarfs the sales from Google and Apple. Amazon’s lead establishes Alexa as the most popular smart assistant, and as we pivot toward smarter and more connected homes in 2019, the news bodes well for Amazon to retain that crown for years to come.

It didn’t hurt that Amazon teamed up with multiple third-party companies to bring Alexa to even more devices. Expect even more expansion in 2019.
