Aquaman Rules the Global Box Office, Surpasses Wonder Woman

Aquaman’s popularity over the holiday period took the movie’s box office tally to new heights, as the movie has now surpassed $822 million at the global box office as of January 1, 2019. That makes James Wan’s newest film the second most successful DC movie, edging out Wonder Woman but trailing behind Batman v Superman.

Frankly, it’s a surprise considering Aquaman is about a guy who can talk to fish. But it’s also not a surprise given the star power of Jason Momoa and the directing prowess of James Wan. Obviously, the duo know how to make a successful movie.

Aquaman has made $216 million in North America since its release on December 21, 2018 (which was only a few weeks ago!). The film has dominated headlines since its release and continues to obliterate the competition.

With a take of over $600 million overseas, it just goes to show how important the international box office is when marketing and releasing a film.

Now that it’s a foregone conclusion that Aquaman is a box office success, it will be interesting to see how quickly Warner Bros. moves forward with greenlighting a sequel. And would James Wan stick around?

You can catch Aquaman in theaters now.
