Buoyed by titles like Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Nintendo Switch has become the fastest-selling console of this generation, according to NPD Group.
NPD Group tracked sales from March 2017 to November 2018, revealing more than 8.7 million Switch units have been sold. Clearly, Nintendo’s Wii U days are dead and buried.
“We are thrilled to see such a strong reaction from consumers in the second holiday season for Nintendo Switch,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
In addition to strong hardware sales, NPD Group data revealed Nintendo is also the overall top-selling U.S. software publisher in 2018 (so far). An earlier report claimed that half of all Switch owners have purchased the console’s most popular games.
Don’t forget that the portable console is also home to great third-party content, too. This year, games like Fortnite, Stardew Valley, and Celeste all became available for the console. Nintendo also launched Nintendo Switch Online, a service that gives users access to NES games, among other features.
We predicted 2018 would be a big year for the Switch and NPD’s data proves that we were right. Next year should be just as good for Nintendo, with many big titles like Yoshi’s Crafted World, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, and Luigi’s Mansion 3 all set for a release.
