How to Take a Screenshot on the iPhone

Maybe you want to take a screenshot of a product you want to share, or maybe you want to screenshot text from an email. Whatever your intentions, taking a screenshot on Apple’s iPhone can be tricky, especially if you own an iPhone without a home button, including the iPhone X or iPhone XS.

Unlike the latest version of Android, you need to press a combination of buttons to take a screenshot on an iPhone. Here’s how to do it.

iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max

  1. With your phone unlocked, press and hold the power button on the right side of the iPhone.
  2. With the side button still pressed, quickly press the volume up button on the left side.
  3. Release both buttons at the same time.
  4. Your screenshot will appear in the lower left corner of the display.

iPhone 8 and earlier

  1. With your phone unlocked, press and hold the power button, which is located on the top of the iPhone.
  2. With the power button still pressed, click the Home button, then release the Home button and power button.
  3. Your screenshot will appear in the lower left corner of the display.

Apple gives users a few options when a screenshot is taken. When a screenshot is in the lower left corner, tap on it and it will bring up an edit screen for resizing and marking up the image.

There’s also a share button in the lower left corner, where you can quickly share the screenshot over email, message, and more. Once you hit the done button, you can choose to save the screenshot to your camera roll or delete it.
