So, you’ve had your Nintendo Switch for a while and you’ve noticed something isn’t quite right. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. It happened to me after logging 180 hours of gameplay in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Good thing the Nintendo Switch comes with a solid warranty.
Be it an issue with the Joy-Con, kickstand, or something else, you are covered by Nintendo’s limited warranty for 12 months. That’s the standard length for any Nintendo console, including the Switch and the Nintendo 3DS line. Games and accessories sold separately carry a three-month warranty.
The warranty will cover any manufacturing or workmanship defects that affects the hardware. Like most limited warranties, it does not cover accidental physical damage such as a cracked screen or liquid damage. It’s also worth noting the warranty cannot be extended. Once the 12 months are up, it’s gone for good and any future repairs will come out of pocket.
I’ve personally used the warranty to repair my Switch and it works pretty great. A few months ago, the clip that locks my Switch Joy-Con into place broke and I had to send it in for repair. If you do need to send in your Switch for repair, you can read my guide of how to do that here.
This post is specifically about the warranty and how it works. As I stated, it’s 12 months from the date you purchase the Nintendo Switch. If it’s been over one year, you’ll be out of luck because you aren’t covered. If you are within the period, I suggest you take advantage of it and fix any hardware issues that may be plaguing your console, even if it’s as small as the kickstand refusing to lock into place because once it has expired, you’ll have to pay for the repair yourself.
In case you aren’t sure, you can begin the process of placing a repair order through Nintendo to confirm you are either within your warranty period or outside of it. You’ll just need the serial number located at the bottom of the Switch.
