Surprise, surprise, Nintendo’s biggest release of the year is crushing the competition as the best-selling game of 2018.
Not even a week into the game’s release are we seeing hints of its dominance. For one, the game had a massively successful launch in Japan, where the Switch was already enjoying the limelight as the hottest console on the market in years. In just three days alone, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sold a staggering 1,238,358 copies, making it the biggest launch that the Switch has seen yet in its home country.
The console itself saw a nice boost of 200,000 units over that period, as well.
Similar results are coming in from the U.K., where the game has skyrocketed to the top of the physical sales charts and takes the prize as the Nintendo Switch’s biggest launch and as the biggest launch in the history of the fighting game series.
And perhaps the most telling statistic of all, we turn to Amazon, which just recently updated the best-selling video games of the entire year. Can you guess which game sits on the top spot after just a single week on the market?
Yup, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Nintendo couldn’t have handled the second year of the Nintendo Switch any better. After the towering success of Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey in the first year, the gaming world sat back and wondered at how Nintendo could possibly top the universal acclaim of those two games.
Nintendo didn’t even try. Instead, the company let the indie scene do all the talking with universal hits like Into the Breach, The Messenger, and Celeste, and just before the holidays, BAM, it has the biggest game of the year on the hottest selling console.
Good move, Nintendo. Good move.
