Soon, you might be able to gather information from various newspapers and magazines under one subscription. Apple will offer a premium membership that unlocks access to outside sources, according to Bloomberg. The content would be attached to Apple News, allowing for a single location to distribute what’s published.
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Apple offer this subscription. Texture was in this space until being acquired by Apple in early 2018. The startup saw its workforce get reduced, but that’s because Apple News already had a full-blown team.
Bloomberg also reported on the idea of a subscription putting together content from various publishers around the same time.
From the latest report, Apple could decide to introduce the premium side of Apple News in mid-2019. Still, some publishers are concerned about losing revenue. Apple intends to pick up a percentage of the subscription’s price before paying its partners.
The media industry continues struggling to battle ad-blockers and free alternatives, so perhaps Apple News can rescue publishers who are experiencing a slide in readership.
Hardware sales are down for most companies, but Apple’s taken a more significant hit due to its identity. The Cupertino-based company also decided to hide unit sales after many years of disclosing that information. Yet there’s no doubt Apple can pick up a large amount of revenue through its services and subscriptions. Already, Apple generates around $10 billion from software-based products.
You’ll probably see another Apple-made subscription arrive next year, too. Apple’s developing a video streaming service with original programming. Along with Apple Music, there could eventually be an all-in-one subscription that draws together multiple services.
It’s unlikely that Apple rolls out Apple News’ subscription at a standalone event. With that said, maybe it’ll go live during WWDC 2019 in May or June. There’s also a possibility it gets delayed until the end of 2019 when new iPhone models go official.
