Netflix has Canceled Daredevil

Relations have been getting cold between Netflix and Marvel as Disney, Marvel’s parent company, works toward launching its own streaming service. In recent months, we’ve watched one Marvel Netflix show after another get squashed, and now not even Daredevil can withstand the boot.

Deadline has received a statement from Netflix saying that “Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix. We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we fill it best to close this chapter on a high note. We’re thankful to showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans have supported the show over the years. While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”

Luke Cage and Iron Fist were canceled one after another earlier this fall, so this is not surprising despite the show’s excellent third season. The two remaining Marvel shows, Jessica Jones and Punisher, are both already set to air respective third and second seasons, but we’re expecting that neither show will last past those regardless of quality.

Daredevil’s third season hit this October to rave reviews from everyone, including us, with some of the show’s best writing, acting, and stuntwork on display.

Especially curious is that last line – that the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel. I don’t think anyone thought Marvel was going to cancel the Daredevil character, so it’s hard not to speculate. Does Marvel already have something Daredevil in the works? It seems unlikely that the show as it currently exists will find life on Disney’s streaming service, which isn’t likely to have much room for stuff as dark as a show about a masochistic vigilante beating people within an inch of their lives. So what’s next for Daredevil? Only time will tell.

It’s disappointing to know we won’t be getting any more Daredevil – Charlie Cox was stellar as the character and it was cool to see one of Marvel’s long-running but lesser-known characters get the “peak TV” treatment. The same way that Arrow kicked off the CW-verse, Daredevil started something at Netflix. We just wish it’d had the staying power of the CW’s shows.

If you haven’t tuned into Daredevil season 3 yet, now is a great time to boot it up and appreciate what the showrunners put together.

Also, it’s probably the last time I get to use this picture:
