Captain Marvel Takes Place 17 Years Before the First Avengers Movie

When Captain Marvel flies into theaters next March, it’ll be set right in the middle of the 1990s.

The exact year was revealed by Disney in an unexpected leak on its Japanese site. The site contains a breakdown of the newest character in the MCU and right in the middle of the page, it reads: “The stage was 1995. The story before the formation of the Avengers.”

One of the most intriguing points of Captain Marvel is that it’s a prequel of sorts to the MCU.

Before the leak, we weren’t sure when exactly it would take place. An image released by Brie Larson strongly suggested a setting in 1991 or possibly 1992, but that does not appear to be the case. If Disney’s official site is to be believed, the year is 1995, 17 years before the first Avengers movie.

The movie will still incorporate many elements of the MCU as we know it, including a much younger versions of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg). The movie should also lay down the connection for Captain Marvel’s role in Avengers 4.

Captain Marvel arrives into theaters March 8, 2019.
