Earlier this year, Huawei released the P20 Pro, a triple-camera monster capable of taking fantastic pictures. Huawei is back with an even more beastly device, one that promises to snap images more detailed and true-to-life compared to the Pixel 3 and iPhone XS.
During a day at the Porsche Experience UK, we took pictures with Huawei’s new Mate 20 Pro to see how they compare to the iPhone XS. The results will surprise you.
Similar to the P20 Pro, Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro features three cameras, but instead of being arranged vertically, they’re setup in a square configuration. Huawei also ditched the P20 Pro’s monochrome sensor, instead relying on larger and improved sensors to snap images with sharper details and less noise.
The Mate 20 Pro features a 20-megapixel wide-angle camera, 40-megapixel camera, and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera. Each camera works in conjunction with Huawei’s AI to create images that should be much improved over the P20 Pro.
One of the areas where users will notice an improvement is with the Mate 20 Pro’s handling of scenes. Now, Huawei’s AI is smart enough to differentiate between different segments of a scene, processing them differently to make a beautiful image.
On the iPhone XS side, Apple has taken strides to improve how its software process images. That means integrating the ISP with the Neural Engine, which in turn allows the iPhone XS to utilize Smart HDR, providing images with more highlight and shadow detail.
It’s clear that the iPhone XS’ camera is a big improvement over last year’s iPhone X—we did a comparison gallery (below) and the proof is in the pudding. But can it compete with Huawei’s latest powerhouse?
We previously tested out the P20 Pro and we found that Huawei created a terrific smartphone camera that was capable of taking stunning images. So, which phone wins this round?
