Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Probably Won’t Arrive for a Very Long Time

The news surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has not been positive over the last few months following the firing of director and writer James Gunn. Now, the latest news about the movie paints an even more dire picture that will make fans very unhappy.

According to Production Weekly, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is going under the production name “Hot Christmas,” won’t begin production until February 2021. That new release date is a stark difference from the original early 2019 production start and May 2020 release date.

With the new delayed production date, using the same year-long principal photography and post-production schedule, it doesn’t look like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be flying into theaters until at least 2022. That’s disappointing for fans who were hoping for the movie’s arrival within a few years.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that the report has not been corroborated by Marvel, so it’s still not certain Guardians Vol. 3’s production date will be delayed by two years. It seems odd for a major Marvel movie to be delayed that long, but we also have to keep in mind that Marvel has never ran into these issues before, so it’s uncharted territory for the studio.

Although the project will reportedly still use James Gunn’s script, it still doesn’t have a director and given the unforeseen production shuffle, the reported delay may have more to do with the actors’ busy schedules rather than Marvel not wanting to get the project done. Within the next two years, Chris Pratt is slated to return to work for Jurassic World 3 (and many other projects) and Zoe Saldana will begin working on multiple Avatar sequels.

If a movie misses a window to get made, often times it takes years to return to it. That may be the issue Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now encountering.

Regardless, we will take the report with a grain of salt until Marvel provides confirmation of the long delay for Guardians Vol. 3. We’re still crossing our fingers it’s not as long as reported.
