How to Turn Off Auto Brightness on the iPhone XS

I love that the iPhone XS can automatically adjust the display’s brightness, but there are times when I want to control the screen’s brightness myself. In fact, I prefer to keep my display’s brightness at about 30 percent or so—not too bright or too dim.

The problem is Apple makes turning off auto-brightness tricky; the setting is hidden behind a series of menus. You’d think the setting could be found under Display & Brightness, but that isn’t the case. Here’s how to turn auto-brightness on or off.

  • Go to Settings
  • Go to General
  • Scroll down to Accessibility
  • Scroll to Display Accommodations
  • Toggle the switch for auto-brightness

Auto-brightness is on by default, but for those of you who would prefer to turn the feature off, you can do so—but Apple doesn’t make it easy.

Be warned that turning off auto-brightness may affect your battery. Apple also warns that long-term display performance might be affected.

Of course, these directions apply to any device running iOS 12, not just to the iPhone XS.
