With Star Wars: Episode IX still over a year away, very little information about the movie has been revealed, save for the addition of some big actors. Thanks to new set photos, however, we have our first look at what appears to be a brand new desert planet, with some mysterious structures erected in the barren landscape.
According to Making Star Wars, the images were snapped at Wadi Rum in southern Jordan. As the images reveal, some colorful structures were built for the set, along with cutouts for alien figures, which are likely used as stand-ins and for planning shots.
According to the Reddit user who snagged the photos, the set featured something that appeared similar to Rey’s landspeeder, as well as landmarks that made the setting look as though it were on Jakku. However, the geography of the area, while similar, isn’t quite like the one featured on Jakku, leading us to believe this might be another location entirely.
“While trying to leave Wadi Rum the next day, were told to take a different path as they were filming in a certain area using a lot of pyrotechnics,” the Reddit user said.
As Making Star Wars points out, the planet Jedha from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story used shots from Jordan. Whether it has any ties to the events of Star Wars: Episode IX remains to be seen. You can check out the set photos down below.
