According to actor Chris Evans, he has officially hung up his shield as Captain America after eight years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Evans posted a heartfelt message on Twitter saying he wrapped filming on Avengers 4, confirming that he’s done with the character for good.
We knew this day would come, but it doesn’t make it any less sad. Evans has been the moral lynchpin of the Avengers franchise since arriving in Captain America: The First Avenger, leading the team against invading aliens and a maniacal robot.
Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.

Evans extended his contract with Marvel to appear in Avengers 4, allowing him to send the character off in a meaningful way. There have been multiple rumors and theories that Cap will make the ultimate sacrifice in Avengers 4, and Evans’ message appears to indicate his inevitable death.
“It was an emotional day to say the least,” Evans said. “Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor.”
Although Evans is done with the role, that doesn’t mean we’ll never see Captain America ever again. There’s always the chance someone else will take up the mantle, as we’ve seen in the comics. However, it’s unlikely Marvel will go that route—at least right now—with another captain set to arrive next year.
With Evans indicating that he’s done with the role, fans will now be wondering what happens to his character in Avengers 4. Whatever happens, we’re likely in for an emotional sendoff.
Avengers 4 is set for a release on May 3, 2019.
