Since its release in 2011, Minecraft has become an incredible success. Over 150 million copies of the game have been sold, with nearly 100 million monthly players—that’s more than any other game on the market, including Fortnite. With that kind of success, you’d think Microsoft would be thinking about a sequel—but you’d be wrong.
In an interview with Business Insider, Microsoft explained that a sequel to the second best-selling game of all time (right behind Tetris) doesn’t make sense.
“I really don’t think that makes sense for Minecraft, given the community,” said Helen Chiang, head of Minecraft at Microsoft. “It’s something that always fractures the community.”
Considering how many people still play Minecraft proves that the community already loves the game the way it is. Microsoft could always add new items and features to the core game without the pressure of doing Minecraft 2.
Or, as we saw over the weekend, Microsoft can introduce a spinoff Minecraft game that stays true to the original while introducing new ideas. Called Minecraft: Dungeons, the game is described as a dungeon crawler akin to Diablo.
There’s no building. Instead, it’s strictly a story-driven adventure game.
“I would say that it’s a distilled version of Minecraft in the sense that we wanted to focus on making sure that we made the dungeon crawler part as good as possible,” said Mojang creative lead Jens Bergensten.
Chiang went on to say that rather than expect players to move from Minecraft to Minecraft 2, Microsoft is more focused on introducing free updates and announcing new games in the same universe.
“I don’t think there’s really a need for Minecraft 2,” Bergensten said. “You would be able to create a Minecraft 2 game in Minecraft.”
