ChargeGate – Apple Faces New Issue as Users Report Charging Issues

A new charging issue is surfacing with Apple products following the release of iOS 12. The biggest piece of the puzzle, however, is that it seems completely random which devices it hits.

Over the past week, an issue has been quietly surfacing in the Apple forums about an issue with charging devices. As time has progressed, comments on the issue – taking on the name of “ChargeGate” – have surfaced on Twitter and numerous other outlets around the internet.

The problem has to do with plugging in a Lightning cable to a device that has been dormant for a period of time. If you do not first wake the screen before plugging in the device it appears that the cable may not be recognized as having been plugged in and thus not begin the charging cycle.

Some users have said that simply waking the screen seems to correct it, while others have found that they need to both wake the screen and detach and reattach the cable to begin the process.

The problem has been replicated with both official Apple products and third-party charging equipment.

As the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max were the newest devices to hit stores, and that was the majority of what people were charging, the problem seemed to be isolated to them. This has led many people thinking it may be a faulty issue with the charging port on the new phones. However, as time has gone on, and more testing has occurred, the problem has been replicated on some older devices as well now leading many to think it is an issue with the iOS 12 software.

At this time, it is unclear what the precise nature of the problem is, but as it has now been replicated on multiple devices from different years, the iOS bug seems to be the logical conclusion and may be fixed with a software patch. If not, then the solution will be far more complex.

We have reached out to Apple for comment, and will update should we receive a reply.
