Paramount Pictures has released a fresh trailer for Bumblebee, an upcoming Transformers spin-off that takes place long before Sam Witwicky unwittingly found himself at the center of a war between the Autobots and Decepticons. If you were left cold by Michael’s Bay’s interpretation of the Transformers franchise, Bumblebee’s latest trailer might restore your faith.

For one thing, the characters in Bumblebee actually look like the characters they’re based on. If Bumblebee as a VW bug wasn’t enough, we also get a look at Shockwave, Starscream, and a Generation 1 Optimus Prime. We even get a get look at Soundwave ejecting Ravage.

Here’s the movie’s official synopsis, which lays out what to expect from Bumblebee:

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Bumblebee hits theaters on December 21.
