Apple’s Shazam Acquisition is Complete, App Going Ad-Free

Months after Apple confirmed plans to acquire Shazam, the deal has officially been completed after undergoing regulatory scrutiny by the European Union. It’s still very early days, so it’s unclear what Apple intends on doing with the app, but we have a few ideas.

One thing Apple does have planned is to remove all ads from both the iOS and Android versions of Shazam. It’s a move that will no doubt endear Apple to the millions of faithful Shazam users.

“Apple and Shazam have a long history together,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music. “Shazam was one of the first apps available when we launched the App Store and has become a favorite app for music fans everywhere. “With a shared love of music and innovation, we are thrilled to bring our teams together to provide users even more great ways to discover, experience and enjoy music.”

Since Shazam launched, the app has been download over 1 billion times, with over 20 million songs identified every day. Considering Apple’s streaming music ambitions, it’s easy to see why the company was so interested in an acquisition. By the time iOS 13 rolls around, we can probably expect some kind of integration.

The technology could also make Apple competitive against Google’s Lens technology, which can identify landmarks, products, and more. With Shazam’s technology, we may see similar features hit iOS in the future.
