When Apple announced iOS 12 over the summer, the company surprised everyone by revealing CarPlay users would be able to use third-party apps, including Google Maps and Waze. Starting immediately, CarPlay users can now use Google Maps if they’re updated to Apple’s latest software.
The update allows CarPlay users to replace Apple Maps with one of the industry’s most trusted mapping services.
In the image above, you can see what Google Maps would look like running on a system equipped with CarPlay support. The experience looks very familiar and will provide users with the excellent data provided by Google, including real-time information and offline maps.
Even with years of improvements, Apple Maps still doesn’t have the reputation of Google Maps. It’s nice to see Apple recognizing there are other options out there.
Waze is also coming to CarPlay in an upcoming update, and we’ll let you know when that goes live.
