Spider-Man for PS4 Includes Incredibly Sad Easter Egg

There’s a dearth of Easter eggs found in Spider-Man for PlayStation 4, ranging from the obvious to the obscure. There’s also one that’s earned the title for the “saddest Easter egg” in video game history.

In the lead up to Spider-Man’s release, Tyler Schultz sent a tweet to Insomniac Games about including a marriage proposal in the game. Surprisingly, Insomniac Games obliged, saying, “Who are we to say no to love.”

With the game now out, people were eager to hear if the epic proposal was accepted. Unfortunately, Schultz revealed that he and his girlfriend broke up in the weeks leading up to the game’s release.

Despite the fact that the couple is no longer together, the Easter egg still made its way into the game as a marquee at a movie theater. “Maddie, will you marry me?” it reads.

It’s one of the more epic proposals I’ve ever heard of, even if it doesn’t have a happy ending. And regardless of the outcome, it’s pretty cool that it was included at all.

To Insomniac’s credit, the developer said it’s willing to change’s the marquee’s text. According to Kotaku, after hearing of Insomniac’s offer, Schultz proposed to change the text to his grandmother’s name, who he said lost her battle with cancer.

If the marquee is changed to his grandmother’s name, the saddest Easter egg might have a happy ending after all.
