The Avengers have faced a lot of villains over the years, from Loki to Ultron. Each time, they’ve come out on top, but when facing against Thanos, the outcome didn’t go in their favor. In fact, they were handily beaten by the Mad Titan, resulting in half of the universe being wiped out.
The outcome of Avengers: Infinity War is exactly why Nick Fury decided to call Captain Marvel, who will play a key role in Avengers 4. (Before that she’ll appear in a standalone film that takes place in the ‘90s.)
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained why Fury finally called Captain Marvel for help after all this time.
“She is more powerful than any character we’ve introduced this far,” Feige said. “So that alone tells you that there’s a reason Nick hit that button at the end (of Infinity War), when he realized that they were up against something far bigger than they had ever been up against before. And having her on your side is hopefully going to change the balance of power in a way that they desperately need.”
While it makes sense that Fury would call Captain Marvel to battle Thanos, the fact that he never thought to call her before doesn’t make much sense. Ultron almost destroyed Earth and Fury didn’t think calling her was a good idea?
When you have access to a hero who is more powerful than Thanos, it’s weird not to call her until after half of the universe has disappeared. What if the Avengers are unable to undo the damage that’s been done? Fury would have a lot of blood on his hands.
Either way, we know that Fury calling Captain Marvel will change the tide in the Avengers’ favor. We’ll see how when Avengers 4 hits theaters on May 3, 2019.
