Apple Products Could Become More Expensive Thanks To New Tariffs

Many of our favorite Apple products could become more expensive if President Trump’s tariffs on China are approved. That includes the AirPods, Apple Watch, and Apple Pencil. The tariffs would put a 25-percent tax on $200 billion worth of products imported from China.

The Cupertino company sent a letter to the U.S. Trade Representative this week, arguing that American companies and consumers would be negatively affected by the tariffs. Apple says American companies would have a more difficult time competing against foreign companies, while product prices could rise.

“Tariffs increase the cost of our U.S. operations, divert our resources, and disadvantage Apple compared to foreign competitors,” Apple’s letter reads. “More broadly, tariffs will lead to higher U.S. consumer prices, lower overall U.S. economic growth, and other unintended economic consequences.”

Other Apple products that could be affected by the tariffs include the Mac Mini, wireless mouse and trackpad, chargers, adapters, cables, and internal components. Essentially, Apple’s entire portfolio will be affected in one way or another, which will ultimately mean the consumer loses.

“It is difficult to see how tariffs that hurt U.S. companies and U.S. consumers will advance the Government’s objectives with respect to China’s technology policies,” Apple said in its letter.

Apple has an event scheduled for next week, where it’s expected to unveil several new products, including a successor to the iPhone X, a device exceeded the $1,000 threshold. With Trump’s proposed tariffs, that price could balloon.
