Avengers 4: New Theory Offers Heartbreaking End to Captain America

At this point, it is a foregone conclusion that at least one of the original six Avengers will see their demise when Avengers 4 rolls into theaters next year. As for who that member will be, multiple theories have been considered. One of the popular choices is Captain America and a new fan theory presents that could be the most heartbreaking end of the original Avenger.

To put the theory into context, let’s revisit the events of Captain America: The First Avenger. The movie ended with Steve Rogers sacrificing himself to destroy the weapons aboard the plane en route to New York while delivering a heartbreaking goodbye for Peggy Carter. Taking a raincheck for a dance, the two set a dance date for next Saturday at the Stork Club at 8 p.m. both knowing Steve isn’t going to make it.

Eventually, Captain America crashes in Antarctica and is frozen until he reawakens in 2012 right on time for the events of The Avengers.

It has been well established that Avengers 4 will use time travel to undo the ash genocide Thanos enacted on the universe using the Infinity Gauntlet. This will either be done with the use of the Time Stone or the Quantum Realm. Whichever way it is used, the Avengers will have access to time travel.

Here’s where the theory comes into play. After undoing the events of Avengers: Infinity War and stopping Thanos, Captain America chooses to depart the Avengers for good and decides to go back in the past and fulfill his long wish to live his life with the love of his life Peggy Carter in 1941.

Over the character arc of Captain America, one of the ways used to show his humanity was his love for Peggy. From their first meet-cute moment in The First Avenger to her death in Civil War, their connection has been strong. What better way to write out Captain America than for him to return to the past and meet up Peggy at the dance date they agreed upon.

It would be an agonizing end to one of our favorite Avengers, but it’s also quite fitting.

Will this happen? Who knows, there’s a lot that makes sense about the theory but there’s also many plot holes it could leave. It could either open up some type of butterfly effect with two Steve Rogers in the past (the future version and the present one that’s stuck in ice) or the MCU could either to solely focus on the present and continue from there, ignoring the consequences Captain’s choice could have in the past.

It’s certainly an interesting theory to consider. I see the plot holes it could open but then again, this would be one of the best ways possible to write out Captain America.
