An alum of Doctor Who is joining Star Wars: Episode IX, which is currently in production ahead of its December 2019 release. The film will conclude the latest trilogy that focuses on Rey and Kylo Ren.

Variety reports Matt Smith, known for playing the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who, will play a “key role” in Star Wars: Episode IX. However, it’s unclear if his character runs with the Resistance or the First Order.

Since taking over directing duties of Star Wars: Episode IX, J.J. Abrams has added a number of new faces to the cast, including Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan, and Naomi Ackie. They join the main cast, which will see Mark Hamill and Carrier Fisher reprise their roles of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, respectively.

Naturally, as with anyone who joins the Star Wars cast, speculation about Rey’s parentage is bound to crop up. Hearing that Smith will play a key role in the upcoming movie only adds fuel to the fire.

Star Wars: Episode IX will hit theaters on December 20, 2019.
