In Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Strange played a pivotal part in the movie’s outcome by giving up the Time Stone in order to save Tony Stark’s life. Now, a new theory claims Doctor Strange will have an even more important role in Avengers 4, with one scene that will apparently show him saving the universe.
The theory is based on previous a report that claimed Doctor Strange would be in a pivotal scene in Avengers 4 with a character who’s completely CGI, similar to Strange’s encounter with Dormammu. The mysterious character, according to the theory, could be the Living Tribunal, a cosmic entity that has limitless power, and has major ties to Doctor Strange in the comics.
The theory argues that every soul that was snapped out of existence in Avengers: Infinity War is contained in the Soul Stone—except for Doctor Strange’s. The Living Tribunal will apparently summon Strange due to his previous knowledge of magic and his use of the Time Stone. The theory explains:
So here’s the deal; the Living Tribunal explains that Thanos’ snap and its aftermath (collapsed societies, intergalactic anarchy, etc.) have done too much damage to the universe, and he thinks the best bet is to destroy it and create a new universe. He ominously challenges Strange to convince him otherwise.
This very same storyline plays out in the comics when the Living Tribunal challenges Doctor Strange to prove that Earth is worth saving. In Avengers 4, Strange has the knowledge that there’s one outcome where the Avengers beat Thanos, which he tells to the Living Tribunal. If the Avengers are successful, the Living Tribunal promises to spare universe.
With Marvel already confirming Phase 4 of the MCU will be more cosmic than the last 10 years, introducing the Living Tribunal makes sense. Marvel already introduced Ego the Living Planet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which nobody expected.
