HTC U12 Life Might Be Outdated from the Start

Don’t expect to see Android 9.0 Pie on HTC’s upcoming mid-range device.

The U12 Life will ship with Android 8.1 Oreo instead, according to one insider. It’d be an odd decision because, by the time HTC unveils this product, Pie will have already been available for several weeks or even months. HTC also committed to bringing the latest version of Android to a handful of existing devices. With that said, there’s no reason why the U12 Life should be outdated from the start.

All hope is not lost, though. HTC could issue a software update for Pie on the U12 Life following its release.

By the way, the U12 Life might not even be made by the Taiwanese company. LlabTooFeR, whose track record on all things HTC holds up, says it’ll be manufactured from the outside. That makes sense considering HTC recently slashed its workforce amid tanking revenue. HTC continues trying to reduce its expenses and remain in the mobile industry.

When it’s official later this year, the mid-range device will join the U12 Plus. HTC’s been focused on a limited number of products to further its resources. The U12 Life should have a 6-inch Full HD+ display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636, and a dual-camera setup. None of that jumps at you, but it’ll mean a more affordable price.

HTC’s U12 Life will likely launch in September or October. We’ll keep an eye on this one as its potential debut draws nearer.
