James Gunn Will Still Play a Huge Role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

As the dust settles on the whole James Gunn being fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ordeal, we’re starting to learn more about what exactly is happening with the movie as well as what type of projects Gunn could work on in the future.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn and Disney are currently in negotiations to agree upon a settlement that will likely fall anywhere between $7 and $10 million. That much could be surmised since Disney fired him, but what wasn’t known until now is that Disney is still planning on using the script James Gunn wrote.

This is a huge development. It ensures that the DNA of the first two movies—the witty dialogue—is present in the third movie continuing the continuity that is of the utmost importance with comedy.

More so, it also meets Drax actor Dave Bautista’s demand for the studio to use the script or he would quit the movie. That solely relied on Disney releasing him from his contract, which didn’t seem likely, but now that issue is completely averted as Disney will use Gunn’s script.

It’s doubtful Disney agreed to use the script to appease Bautista, but fans will take it nonetheless. What likely happened is that Disney knows how hard it is to write a good script and seeing as Gunn hit it out of the park with the previous two Guardians movies, the studio decided to go with a known commodity rather than hire someone new.

While it’s sad to see Gunn depart from Guardians of the Galaxy, don’t feel too bad for the director. Aside from getting a nice payday, the report states the director is a hot commodity among studios and will have his pick of multiple projects when the settlement is reached. “I’d work with him in a heartbeat,” stated an exec at another studio.

However, that won’t happen until Gunn resolves his contract issue with Disney. When that does happen, it won’t surprising to see him attached to a big-time movie in the near future.
