Waymo Is Taking People to Walmart in One US City

Waymo wants to take you shopping. If you’re in Phoenix, you’ll be able to travel between home and a Walmart store without any hands on a steering wheel.

Both companies announced a partnership to run a pilot program in which customers can pick up their online orders at Walmart using a self-driving car. After you complete your order, the Walmart store will collect the items and get it ready. You’re just hopping in a Waymo vehicle, grabbing your bags at the store, and returning home.

Aside from getting a futuristic ride, Waymo says it’ll give you a discount on your order. But the Alphabet-owned company didn’t even stop there. It also has a new deal with Avis Budget Group for when people need a rental car, picking up or dropping off nearby rentals.

The other deals making their debut this week involve AutoNation and Element Hotel. If your everyday vehicle is in for a repair, AutoNation can step in with a Waymo vehicle. Element Hotel, meanwhile, will use Waymo as its preferred form of transportation for guests in Chandler.

Don’t be too upset that these services are limited to Phoenix right now. Waymo says its partnerships are with national companies; therefore, it’s laying the groundwork to expand throughout the U.S. in the future.
