James Gunn is out as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Disney has fired the director of the first two Guardians movies. Gunn was lined up to direct the third film, but after multiple tweets surfaced that made fun of very controversial topics, he was released from the project. Most of the the tweets were from nearly a decade ago, and in a preemptive move Gunn tweeted an apology for the carelessness of his words saying he was a provocateur back then.

The move did little to quell the growing outcry to which Disney responded to by severing ties with the director. The move has massive ramifications on the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Gunn was one of the leading creative minds and was in charge of one of the most successful franchises the studio had produced.

“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him,” said Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn of the decision.

Prior to the move, James Gunn was slated to oversee the MCU’s cosmic side after the conclusion of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn had previously stated that the first draft for the movie, which he was writing, was nearly complete. It’s unclear if Marvel will use the same script or hire a new writer to start from scratch.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was slated to begin production later this year with a 2020 release date, but in light of the most recent development, Marvel may change its plans.
