10 essential tech products for your next summer vacation

With summer in full swing, you’re probably thinking of going on a trip. (Might I recommend Southern California, where TechnoBuffalo HQ is located?) Wherever you decide to go, you’ll need to keep yourself connected. That means carrying an arsenal of gadgets and gizmos.

While noise-canceling headphones are obvious for a noisy flight, we have plenty of other suggestions, too, like Google’s Pixel 2, a compact digital camera, and more. We even included a water bottle, because staying hydrated is important!

I’ve been on several trips in 2018 and I rely on many of these devices to keep me sane. I know going to big events seems glamorous, but there’s a lot of downtime, so the Nintendo Switch is a godsend for keeping myself entertained. I’m currently playing Celeste, in case you were wondering.

Below are ten gadgets that make for great travel companions.

Nintendo Switch

It’s portable, it has an excellent (and growing) library of games, and it’s endlessly charming. On a recent trip to Chicago, the Nintendo Switch was the perfect way to combat the boring flight; I actually beat Super Mario Odyssey while flying over Utah. How cool is that? If you haven’t experienced the beauty of the Switch, you won’t regret getting Nintendo’s latest console.

Anker portable battery

The only downside to the Nintendo Switch’s portability is how quickly it runs out of battery. Luckily, Anker has a lineup of batteries capable of charging the console, along with your other devices. Something like the PowerCore 20100 is a great road warrior because it can charge your many devices several times over.

MacBook

When you travel, you want your stuff to be as light as possible. That’s why Apple’s MacBook is such a solid machine. At 2.03 pounds, you’ll scarcely realize it’s in your bag. And when you do need it—maybe you’re writing a post about summer travel tech—it’s small enough to fit on the seat back tray table in front of you.

AirPods

One of Apple’s best first-generation products is still fantastic more than a year after their release. The AirPods are supremely portable, offer great battery life, and provide users with an enjoyable listening experience. The best part is they pair so easily with other Apple products. If you have an iPhone, the AirPods are a must-have.

iPad 9.7-inch

The 9.7-inch iPad has the best qualities of the iPad Pro without being unreasonably expensive. It isn’t just for students and artists—the 9.7-inch iPad is plenty fast and features phenomenal battery life, making it a great companion for the road. And when you do need to get work done, you can use it with the Apple Pencil.

HydroFlask

I know this isn’t tech in the way we associate the word. But I’m not joking when I say this is my favorite purchase in the last few years—beating out the iPhone X and AirPods. It features double wall vacuum insulation, keeping liquids cold up to 24 hours or warm for 12 hours. As temperatures begin to rise, my HydroFlask is the one thing I never leave the house without.

Bose QuietComfort 35

Once you use Bose’s QuietComfort 35 noise-canceling headphones, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them. Not only are they incredibly comfortable, but they provide expansive sound. Plus, they’ll block out all the noise around you, which is priceless when you’re on a 10-hour flight overseas.

Pixel 2

The Pixel 2—not the Pixel 2 XL—features a comfortable design, excellent battery life, and a fantastic camera. Scratch that: The Pixel 2’s camera is the best on the market. That’s reason enough to pick one up, but it’ll also receive Android P when it comes out this summer, making it the only Android device you should consider.

Sony RX100 VI

If you want a little more pixel power in your pocket, Sony’s RX100 VI is a great camera to consider. It’s compact, it has great battery, and it produces wonderful images. As point-and-shoot cameras go extinct, Sony’s RX100 line remains the benchmark for compact cameras.

Watch

Not a smartphone, but a regular analog watch. If you plan to go on a trip this summer, knowing the time will be crucial. And, let’s be honest, you can’t always rely on your smartphone, especially with your battery in the red zone. Always knowing the time is underrated, and you’ll get a bonus of earning extra style points.
