Nokia 9 expected in late August, in-display fingerprint scanner likely

HMD Global is developing a new flagship, and it might ship with an in-display fingerprint scanner before other mainstream products in the pipeline do so.

The Nokia 9, according to WinFuture, will boast cutting-edge specifications that put it right up against other flagships due out in the second half of 2018. With an in-display fingerprint scanner, HMD Global would be able to have its high-end phone stand out. Other phones have the feature, but they’re tucked away from the rest of the world due to limited availability.

Known as ‘A1 Plus’ internally, mobile industry insider Roland Quandt observed documents that tip this off as being HMD Global’s next flagship. It should also include an LG-made OLED display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845, and Android P.

The company behind Nokia Mobile is reportedly facing “high risk” with the camera, but we don’t know what exactly is going on there yet. Something like a tri-camera setup is one possibility.

Assuming everything remains on schedule, the Nokia 9 is expected to make an appearance at IFA 2018. The trade show will begin on August 31 in Berlin with companies from across the consumer electronics spectrum participating. HMD Global doesn’t normally host standalone events, so these trade shows are used to generate immediate buzz.

The arrival of HMD Global’s Nokia 9 could coincide with the latest version of Android rolling out worldwide. Since the latest Nokia-branded phones have pushed up-to-date, secure software, the Nokia 9 will probably get similar positioning. That said, the Nokia 9 might be released in September or October.
