Jared Leto to play leading role in Spider-Man spinoff

Is Jared Leto done playing the Clown Prince of Crime? It doesn’t matter, because the actor is jumping to another superhero universe, nabbing a role in Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff.

The actor will play Morbius, based on the Spider-Man scientist who gains vampire-like abilities after an experiment goes awry. The character was first introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #101 back in 1971.

When in the Morbius persona, the character gains superhero strength, speed, and durability—along with an insatiable thirst for blood. That puts him on Spider-Man’s radar, and the two become enemies.

Whether Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will appear in the film is unclear, but it’s clear Sony is committed to expanding the superhero’s universe. This October, the studio will release a Venom movie, and there are reports it could get even bigger in the future.

According to Variety, Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) will direct the movie, and Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Lucas Foster will act as producers. Meanwhile, the movie is being written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, both of whom teamed up for Netflix’s Lost In Space series.

Outside of these Spider-Man spinoffs, we’ll see Holland appear as the superhero in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.
