Note that there are spoilers ahead

In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Yoda made a surprise appearance as a Force ghost to impart one last lesson to Luke Skywalker. Now, rumor has it another legendary Jedi will have a cameo in Star Wars: Episode IX.

According to The Sun, citing sources out of Los Angeles, Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi, who last donned the Jedi robes in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. He’ll appear as a Force ghost, of course, but his involvement could reportedly be just a teaser before we see him in a standalone film, which The Sun said Disney has been mulling over.

The report doesn’t provide any details about how McGregor’s Obi-Wan will fit into Episode IX’s story, claiming that he’s filming his scenes in secret. But with Luke, Leia, and Han now out of the picture, perhaps Obi-Wan will provide mentorship to Rey, who will be on her own when Episode IX kicks off.

At the end of The Last Jedi, Luke dies peacefully on Ahch-To after fighting Kylo Ren as a Force projection. That means Rey and Kylo Ren are a few of the last remaining Jedi, though we do know that a child on Canto Bight is sensitive to the Force. How that child will factor into Episode IX remains to be seen.

McGregor was one of the best parts of the Star Wars prequels, and in lieu of a standalone film, seeing him appear in Episode IX is the next best thing, even if he is a Force ghost.

Star Wars: Episode IX is currently scheduled for a December 2019 release.
