Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director shares important timeline details

It’ll be a few years before another Guardians of the Galaxy movie is released, but that doesn’t mean details for the film can’t be shared.

In response to a question about when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will take place, director James Gunn said, “It will be after [Avengers: Infinity War].” That was to be expected, given the circumstances of Marvel’s latest blockbuster, but it’s nice to get clarification right from the source.

Gunn’s response is important because recent comments from actor Chris Pratt suggested the next Guardians movie might be a prequel. Perhaps Pratt meant the upcoming film may include flashbacks to a time before the first Guardians, focusing on the relationship between Yondu and Star-Lord.

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 not expected to be released until 2020, Marvel’s more immediate plan is to release Captain Marvel (March 8, 2019) and Avengers 4 (May 3, 2019). Avengers 4 will cap off Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, paving the way for a revamped MCU that will help usher in new storylines and new characters. The Guardians will play a big role in that future.

As to which characters will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, that remains to be seen. Avengers: Infinity War’s ending could have major repercussions throughout the MCU seeing as Thanos turned some characters into dust, including Groot and Star-Lord.

We’ll have a better idea of what to expect from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 when Avengers 4 hits theaters next year. It’s unlikely the damage done by Thanos will stick, which means we’ll see the gang back together by the time Gunn’s next film comes out.
