Apple updates Siri’s sports knowledge ahead of World Cup

by Danny Zepeda | June 13, 2018

Apple announced Siri is getting a major sports knowledge boost in preparation of the upcoming FIFA World Cup in countries like Brazil, Russia, Finland and more. In total, Siri will better understand World Cup queries for 35 countries including the United States.

Asking Siri question like “when does France play Austria” will yield a sports card that answers the questions with the date and time of the match along with the channel it will be on TV. Other questions like “what teams play in group C” or “who won the Germany-Mexico game” will conjure up similar well-defined answers.

The Siri update will apply for the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, HomePod and Mac.

Beyond the Siri upgrades, Apple also announced it will heavily feature football in its News and Podcast apps, highlighting articles focusing on the World Cup. The TV app on iOS and Apple TV will also feature World Cup coverage, promoting the channels that are airing games.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicks off June 14 and will run through July 15 when the final match will be held.
