Through all the turmoil the DCEU has endured, somehow Suicide Squad 2 is still in the works. The sequel to the 2016 film that was critically reviled but financially successful is being considered as one of the next DCEU projects. Now, it has two new writers coming into the fold to work on the script.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has brought on David Bar Katz and Todd Stashwick to write the script for Suicide Squad 2, joining director Gavin O’Connor. It’s not clear what storyline the sequel will tackle or if the entire cast, which consisted of Will Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie, will return, though the latter two have been linked to other DC movies.
The DCEU is up in the air right now, searching for some answers after its initial failure to establish a Marvel-like universe. The first few movies were successful, but only Wonder Woman was a hit with critics and fans. Yet, everything fell apart with the train wreck that was Justice League, mustache fiasco included.
Greenlighting a sequel to a movie that didn’t really connect with fans seems questionable, but Warner Bros. is still moving forward with the idea. It joins a slate of DCEU movies that are in the works with the likes of The Batman, Birds of Prey, a standalone Joker movie and Green Lantern Corps.
Warner Bros. still hasn’t laid out a concrete line-up of movies it has planned out. Aside from the movies in the works, only Aquaman, Wonder Woman 2 and Shazam! are currently being made. It’ll be interesting to see when and if Suicide Squad 2 does enter production.
