Michael Myers is back, but it appears that some things have changed since last we saw him. And, as promised, the Halloween trailer makes it look like every film but the original 1978 is going to be ignored.

Ever since the new Halloween was announced, it has been pretty clear it’s a sequel and a reboot all at once. While John Carpenter’s 1978 film lore stands intact, even his Halloween II has been tossed out. With that goes the idea that Michael was Laurie’s (Jamie Lee Curtis) brother. Though the trailer does address that past piece of canon saying that it is something in this world have believed.

So the road is clear for this new Halloween to go anywhere it wants. The film does have John Carpenter’s blessing and he is serving as an executive producer and the composer for the film’s score.

Will it be a worthy follow up? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Halloween will hit theaters on Oct. 19, 2018.
